Access to energy in times of COVID-19 in Dakar
Published: 1 Oct 2020
The city of Dakar presented its experience during a webinar organised by the Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) in cooperation with Climate Chance on “Action led by local actors to pursue the necessary energy transition in the current pandemic context in Africa”.
Dakar, a signatory city of the CoM SSA initiative, has already been implementing climate action over the last few years, with a focus on access to energy. As the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world in 2020, the city of Dakar needed to rapidly expand its medical capacities.
The improved medical facilities benefited from renewable energy sources, including solar panels and the use of bio-sources material to insulate roofs. That way, the city of Dakar combined energy efficiency and resilience to help combat possible new surges during the pandemic. Other solar-powered public lightening projects, with financial support from the European Union, are postponed and will resume as soon as the sanitary situation allows.
