Cameroon, in collaboration with CoM SSA, is taking a step closer towards unlocking climate finance

Synergies created between CoM SSA and the FEICOM in the fight against climate change, aim to support Cameroonian municipalities towards more ambitious and effective climate actions and access to funding. 
 

Cameroon, like most countries in Africa, is already facing the consequences of climate change. Rapid urbanisation is one of the major features of the socio-economic dynamics in the region, which results in strong pressure on cities; creating vulnerability to the effects of climate change.

Within the framework of the Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA),  CoM SSA partner GIZ and the Special Fund for Communal Equipment and Intervention (FEICOM) have signed a partnership agreement in order to reinforce their collaboration on local development in Cameroon.

The agreement will bring joint partners additional knowledge on specific topics such as public lighting, access to drinking water and integrated waste management. The signing ceremony took place in December 2020 at the FEICOM Headquarters in Yaoundé.

This partnership will strengthen the already well-established collaboration between GIZ and FEICOM in the framework of decentralisation and local development. It is the result of a more targeted collaboration on the  support to the Cameroonian signatories within the CoM SSA initiative, to ensure effective and strategic management of climate change impacts on their territories.

According to Mrs Christine Schuster, in charge of the GIZ portfolio in Cameroon:

“The partnership between the GIZ and FEICOM in the framework of the support to the CoM SSA opens a door to high-level collaboration on two key areas. On one hand, this partnership aims at carrying out actions together for accompanying municipalities in the maturation of climate infrastructure projects and the subsequent search for funding to carry them out. On the other hand, in its training aspect, this collaboration will bring joint partners additional knowledge on specific topics such as public lighting, access to drinking water or integrated waste management.”

The partnership agreement has been signed by Mr Philippe Camille Akoa, the FEICOM Managing Director. GIZ was represented at this ceremony by Mrs Christine Schuster and Mrs Mireille Atangana, Technical Advisor of the     Support Project at the CoM SSA. The ceremony was honoured by the presence of Mr Steven Rault, Programme Officer of the Cooperation Section of the Delegation of the European Union in Yaoundé, as well as representatives of partner ministries such as the Ministry of Decentralisation and Local Development (MINDDEVEL) and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (MINHDU).
