CoM SSA at COP24

The 24th edition of the Conference of State Parties to the UNFCCC (COP24), the largest gathering of climate and energy actors, took place from 3 to 16 December 2018 in Katowice, Poland. The Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) held 2 side-events.

The “Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM): Mayors4Ambition” day was held on 10 December at the EU Pavillion. CoM SSA was leading the session titled Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) and experiences from other regions: Synergies between access to energy and climate change”.

Mr Bruno Loglo, Mayor of Tsevie (Togo) and Ambassador of CoM SSA presented the city pilot project focusing on the increase access to energy while sharing his take on the added value of being part of a network of local authorities such as CoM SSA.

Mr Celestino Alfonso, from the city of Praia (Cape Verde) introduced the climate and energy challenges of the island capital city and their plan to move towards renewable energy production as CoM SSA signatory.

Jointly with UCLG Africa, Energies 2050, CEMR and Climate chance association. CoM SSA held the side-event Structuring and enhancing climate action in African cities and territories to support the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) on 12 December.

Introduced by the Special Envoy for Climate Change and High-Level Champion for COP24 Tomasz Chruszczow, the session was divided into 2 panels: one addressing the need to strengthen the role of African cities and territories in the climate change negotiation process, and another one showcasing initiatives scaling up the implementation of climate action at local level such as the CoM SSA.

These 2 side-events were also the occasion to share the new publication on Talanoa Dialogues.
