Dakar, Senegal – Mayors fighting climate change

The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) participated on February 13th in the “National Workshop for Sharing Experiences on the Development of Action Plans to Combat Climate Change,” organized by Enda Energie. Eleven Senegalese signatory cities of the Covenant of Mayors for Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) participated in this event, as well as representatives of the national government, development partners, and civil society organizations.

The goal of the workshop was to explore the mechanisms and tools that enable the signatory cities to transform their commitments into concrete actions. During the workshop, the Office of Technical Cooperation (OTC) of AECID in Senegal attended the informational session of the CoM SSA Initiative and presentation of the results of previous phases of CoM SSA from the cities of Dakar and Pikine. During the workshop, there were enriching discussions between the participants, in which the difficulties they face in order to implement their commitments, as well as their determination and their responsibility towards the underlying problems were underscored.

The Covenant of Mayors is the largest movement of cities driving urban climate action. The Covenant has obtained commitments from thousands of cities from six continents and from more than 120 countries, representing almost 10% of the world’s population. Initially launched in the EU, the initiative was first extended to neighboring countries in Eastern Europe and in the southern Mediterranean, then to Latin America and the Caribbean, and to countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
