First sub-Saharan cities set with a Climate Plan

Started 4 years ago, the Covenant of Mayors for Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) is a network, now strong of more than 210 cities, where cities commit to climate action in general, and more specifically to adopt and implement a climate action plan.
Civil servants from signatory cities benefited from annual training and capacity building seminars and specific visits from CoM SSA team of experts to the municipality, mobilising mayors, city staff, civil society and other local stakeholders.

Several cities have now completed their Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plan (SEACAP) and already started to implement activities on the ground.

- Togo: Tsévié validates its SEACAP (story and video)
- Ivory Coast: Bouaké validates its SEACAP (story and video)
- Cameroon: the municipalities of Yaoundé 3, Yaoundé 4, Datcheka and Doumé finalised SEACAP (see pictures below)
- Senegal: Dakar and Pikine plan to finalised their SEACAP in 2020 and mobilise other Senegalese cities to share their experience (story)
- Mauritania: Nouakchott completed several parts of the SEACAP (pictures)
- Mozambique: Nacala started the elaboration of its SEACAP (pictures)
- South Africa: Steve Tschwete is working on the elaboration of its SEACAP.

Genuine collaboration critical for African cities to combat devastating climate change
We need to take a long, hard look at the state of our planet and map a better course for our future. We need genuine collaboration, true inclusivity and authentic commitment to decrease the significant gap between promises and climate action. The recent Africa Climate Summit and UNFCCC Africa Climate Week, together with the Global Stocktake Report, highlighted that there is an urgent need to scale up a rigorous all-of-economy, all-of-society approach which leads to significant climate action this decade in order to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
