Kribi 1 takes a step towards becoming a sustainable and clean energy city

On 18 April 2023, the municipality of Kribi 1 in Cameroon officially launched its Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plan (SEACAP). The event that commemorated the completion and solemn handover of the SEACAP to the Kribi 1’s Executive Council featured different stakeholders of the city, representatives from sector ministries, local civil society and youth.
In recent years, extreme climatic events like sea level rise, storms, fog and flooding have put the seaside town of Kribi to the test and shown that the climate emergency is not only a matter for distant lands. In particular, coastal erosion and flooding appear to make the city more vulnerable and are likely to increase in coming decades.
These and other climate hazards brought the municipality of Kribi 1 to develop a climate action plan. Kribi 1’s SEACAP includes 30 priority actions in the sectors of waste management, coastal and other ecosystems’ protection, sustainable use of fisheries resources and access to energy.
Through its SEACAP, the council intends to attain the following mitigation, adaptation, and access to clean energy objectives by 2030:
- Reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 40%, compared to the status quo scenario;
- Build up the resilience of key sectors of the local economy and vulnerable populations to coastal erosion, flooding, and other climate hazards;
- Increase the rate of access to electricity to 100% while developing the local renewable energy potential;
- Increase the rate of access to clean cooking methods by 80%.
With this, the city continuously seeks funds and partners to make Kribi “a more resilient and sustainable seaside city by 2030”.
