Launch of the initiative of the Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa
26, 27 et 28 July 2017 – Hôtel La Majesté, Bohicon

The main objective of the 4-year CoM SSA project is to increase the capacity of cities to provide access to sufficient, sustainable and safe energy related services to urban and peri-urban populations (especially the poor). In this perspective, eight African projects (Dakar, Kampala, Zou, Tsévié, Pikine, Nouakchott, Bouaké and Lubumbashi) received financial support from the European Union for the elaboration of their Climate and Energy Plan (SEACAPs).

Following the launch ceremonies already organized by Kampala, in Uganda, and Tsévie, in Togo, the Council of Zou municipalities is organizing this event to present the PLANERZOU project carried out by the nine municipalities stressing the three pillars of its action: Adaptation – Mitigation – Access to energy.

A CoM delegation composed of assigned partners will facilitate capacity building sessions and exchanges with the various focal points of municipalities and representatives of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).

The highlights of this event will be:

  • The presentation of the thematic areas and benefits for African cities
  • The presentation of SEACAP et role of CSOs
  • The presentation of PLANERZOU

The Mayors and Local Authorities of the Council of Zou municipalities, the representatives of state institutions, CSO representatives, private sector actors and EU Delegation to Benin representatives are expected to attend.

The Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa initiative is funded by the European Union, and aims to build capacity of cities to create a network of local authorities skilled to advise on policies in favour of Sustainable Cities, at regional and international levels.
