The CoM SSA at the Climate Chance Africa Summit in Abidjan

The Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) welcomes you at the Climate Chance Africa Summit, on 28-29 June 2018 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

This Summit will bring together the community of climate actors of non-Party stakeholders from all over Africa – local governments, businesses, NGOs, trade unions, the scientific community, representatives of youth organizations, indigenous peoples and women, and many more. These groups are active at the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), joining the fight against climate change with their associated networks.

With a focus on Africa, thematic workshops will highlight good practices, as well as exemplary and inspiring projects of climate action in Africa.

As part of the CoM SSA and this event, ICLEI World Secretariat and ICLEI Africa, supported by CoM SSA partners, will organize a workshop on Sustainable Climate Financing for African cities. There you will get useful information on access to finance for local governments, explore existing finance tools and models. Technical experts will guide the discussion, with a focus on understanding challenges relating to access to finance at the local level. How can these be addressed to scale up local and regional climate ambitions, and so trigger national ambitions when tackling climate change?  The workshop will take place on 27th June prior to the official opening of the Climate Chance Summit.

Besides, by focusing on the built environment, ICLEI, in collaboration with its partners in the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GABC), will organize a roundtable during the event. Taking the form of a Talanoa Dialogue, the roundtable aims to bring key actors together to explore how to scale up action on sustainable buildings and construction in Africa. Where we are? Where we want to go? How will we get there? Join us and help formulate some key suggestions on the role of the buildings and construction sector in the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in Africa.

The Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa also planned other activities during the Climate Chance Summit, including:

1. A technical workshop on the Guideline developed by the Joint Research Center of the European Union Commission  (JRC)
2. A Focus Group on the CoM SSA
3. A workshop on the development of the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SEACAP).
4. A speech during the closing plenary
5. And a meeting on synergy exploration
