The Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa at the 4th Strategic Meeting of United Cities and Local Governments of Africa

Cities and Local Governments of Africa organized its 4th Strategic Meeting for the West African Region from 28 to 29 May 2018 in Accra, Ghana. This meeting follows those held beforehand for the eastern, southern and central regions.

These Regional Strategic Meetings provide an annual platform for dialogue with key representatives of Local Governments to jointly plan the implementation of relevant activities designed to achieve strategic objectives and initiatives.

As in other regions, the Accra meeting saw the participation of Presidents and Permanent Secretaries of National Associations of Local Authorities as well as representatives of the Network of Local Elected Women of Africa (REFELA) of the West African Region.

Several global and regional agendas and initiatives that require the involvement and full participation of local and sub-national governments, such as the Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA), were presented to the participants.

The SSA CoM was presented at the opening ceremony by Help Desk Officer Abdoul Gafarou Tchalaou in the presence of the Ghanaian Minister of Local Government, Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Energy and several other distinguished guests.

The presentation of the initiative gave rise to several interests in this case, the benefits and the procedure of accession. In total, 17 mayors have shown their willingness to join, which they wanted to materialize by signing the letter of intent. Their membership will be formalized once their communal council has deliberated.

This meeting also served as a forum for discussion with the Permanent Secretaries of the national associations, on upcoming events that will bring together local elected representatives in their respective countries.

The Mapping of the next events realized during this 4th strategic meeting also represents an opportunity to promote the CoM SSA initiative in order to obtain more signature.
